BOTOX and Dysport are non-surgical anti-aging solutions derived from the botulinum toxin. As a cosmetic treatment, the injections can temporarily paralyze muscles in the treated area. The muscle is relaxed, softening the look of fine lines and wrinkles. It is typically used on the forehead and around the eyes.

What are injectables?

These days, it seems like everyone is looking to turn back the clock. Beginning as early as your late twenties, you may notice fine lines and wrinkles beginning to develop around your forehead and eyes.

While expression lines and wrinkles are a natural part of the aging process, injectables like BOTOX and Dysport can soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles to let your best features shine through and preserve a younger appearance.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, BOTOX® treatments have become the most popular way to rejuvenate the aging face. Millions of men and women look younger and more refreshed thanks to the amazing effects of BOTOX® and Dysport.

How is BOTOX used?

BOTOX® is useful in the treatment of:

  • Creases in the forehead
  • Frown lines between the eyes
  • Smile lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Lip lines
  • Vertical neck bands

Our doctors also use BOTOX® to raise the outer eyebrows, creating the beautiful shape seen on models. Many young patients in their 20s and 30s are undergoing BOTOX® treatments for this desired effect. They also use it as a preventative measure to stop wrinkles before they occur.

What can I expect from BOTOX?

BOTOX® is made from sterile Botulinum Toxin A, which prevents the contraction of muscles. In a simple office procedure, a small amount of BOTOX® is injected into the muscle immediately beneath the wrinkle. Over the next few days the muscle becomes weaker and the overlying skin relaxes. This causes the wrinkle to soften and become less noticeable. In some cases, the wrinkle completely disappears.

What is recovery like after BOTOX?

There is little discomfort and anesthesia is not required. Side effects are minimal but may include minor redness at the injection site. There is no downtime and you may resume your normal daily life immediately after the treatment, though we advise refraining from exercise for a few hours.

What is Dysport?

Dysport is similar to BOTOX in that it is a type of botulinum toxin injection. It is also typically used to treat wrinkles, though it also has many “off-label” uses. Dysport is used to fight signs of aging in a way that looks completely natural and doesn’t leave you with a frozen or “worked-on” look.

What can Dysport treat?

Dysport can be used to treat:

  • Frown lines in between the eyebrows
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet or smile lines around the eyes

Dysport has also been used to treat muscle spasms in some people, though anti-aging and wrinkle reduction are its primary function. The injection relaxes the surrounding muscle tissue, smoothing out the area and reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

What can I expectduring Dysport injections?

Injectables like Dysport are performed as an outpatient procedure because of the non-invasive nature of the injections and extraordinarily low risk of complication. Multiple injections are administered into the treatment area, which typically takes about 20 minutes to complete. You will be able to resume work or other activities immediately following your treatment.

How is Dysport different than BOTOX?

Dysport and BOTOX may seem like the same thing, but each formula is used in unique circumstances based on a few key differences, including:

  • Molecule size. Dysport has a smaller molecule than BOTOX.
  • Diffusion. Dysport tends to spread, while BOTOX is concentrated to a specific area.
  • Results. You may see results quicker with Dysport, but BOTOX may last longer.
  • Number of units. You may need more units of Dysport to get the same result because of the way it diffuses over a larger area.
  • Cost per unit. Although you may need more units of Dysport, the per-unit price is much cheaper than BOTOX, making treatments similarly priced.

The differences between Dysport and BOTOX do not necessarily make one better than the other, although we may recommend a specific formula based on your goals.
